ISLAMABAD:    The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors
(CPNE) while welcoming the decision of unanimously rejecting the Media
Tribunals by all representative media organizations has warned government
to protest if proposal of such special tribunals was not withdrawn. *

*This was resolved during a CPNE Islamabad Committee meeting chaired by its
Vice President Sardar Khan Niazi held at Islamabad and was specially
attended by Secretary General Dr. Jabbar Khattak as well. *

*“The federal government’s decision of establishing media tribunals is an
attempt of imposing curbs on media; therefore it could not be accepted”
said the meeting participants. *

*It was decided that CPNE would support and stand with all media
organizations in the struggle against curbs on media freedom and would
endorse all steps taken by Joint Standing Committee in this regard. *

*Meeting resolved that CPNE after consultations with all stake holders
would devise strategy against government’s decision and reserves the right
of extreme protest if required. *

*“Government while keeping in mind the Central Media List, should release
advertisement on merit and uniform policy should be adopted in distribution
of advertisements” demanded the meeting. *

*Meeting further decided that two to three events per month would be held
as to activate Islamabad committee and political personalities as well as
government representatives should be invited in those events. *

*The meeting was attended by CPNE joint secretary Shakeel Ahmed Turabi,
Amir Ilyas Rana, Syed Safeer Hussain Shah, Mumtaz Ahmed Sadiq, Abdul Salam
Bath, Tarique Sameer, Sajjad Abbasi and Syed Naqi Kazmi. *
