Islamabad : Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan on Monday approved a three-year extension in the tenure of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister Officer, the decision of extension has been taken in view of the regional security environment.
Bajwa was appointed as COAS on November 26, 2016 by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Born in Gakhar Mandi, Gujranwala, Gen Bajwa took over command of Pakistan’s military from General (retd) Raheel Sharif, despite being fourth in order of seniority.
The powerful Army chief joined 16 Baloch Regiment in 1980, the battle-hardened forcethat in the past has given three army chiefs includes Gen Yahya Khan, Gen Aslam Beg and Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
