Sargodha: The Department of Statistics, Sargodha University organized on Friday a day-long seminar under the theme ‘Statistical Analysis of Extreme Events’ to overcome the damages and to highlight the positive impact of rare events.
The event aimed at highlighting the role of statistics in decision making, significance of analysis of extreme events, advantages of using regional approach for extreme values analyses.
The seminar was attended by faculty members, researchers and students of the Department of Statistics.
The participants get the knowledge of forecasting analysis and recommendations for estimating extreme events and illustration of results through a real life example.
The speakers highlighted the developments in recent methodologies of extreme events estimation, illustration of results through a real life examples and the way forward. They discussed the tools for analysis of rare events like regional frequency analysis, site analysis, distributional modeling along with their assumption and constraints.
Keynote speaker of the seminar was Dr Zamir Hussain, from Research Center for Modeling and Simulation, National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad. He informed the seminar that statistical data with empirical evidence was imperative to make right decisions.
Analysis of extreme events can play key role to enhance understanding of the capability of predicting extremes, and it also helps decision makers in developing adaptation strategies to mitigate impact and losses, Dr Hussain added.
Dr Muhammad Iqbal, Chairman of the Department of Statistics emphasized on importance of the statistics in real life as well as its utilization. He said statistics was playing an important role in development of the nation and society. He urged future scientists to conduct research which would help addressing problems confronted by the common man.
At the end, Dr Muhammad Iqbal distributed certificates among the participants and organizers of the seminar.
