England: England captain Joe Root says the Test series victory over India, the world’s number one ranked team, was the best moment of his captaincy career.
By sealing a 60-run victory in the fourth Test at the Ageas Bowl, England also claimed the series with one match to spare to register their first victory since the 2-1 defeat of West Indies last summer. Following a disastrous winter, and a poor draw with Pakistan at the start of the summer, this was a much-needed victory.
“I think it probably has been,” Root said after play when asked if this was his best victory as captain. “It’s definitely been the most enjoyable. I’ve felt very in control of things.”
England were excellent with the ball and in the field on the fourth day, bowling India out and holding their nerve when Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane combined for a partnership of 101 which at one stage threatened to take the game away from them.
