Srinagar: Thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of a student, Umar Kumhar, in Shopian district, today.
According to KMS, Umar Kumhar, a ninth class student, was killed and more than thirty people were injured when the Indian troops fire bullets, pellets and teargas shells on protests against a cordon and search operation in Turkawangam area of the district, last evening. The troops had also damaged two residential houses and at least four cowsheds in the area.
Thousands of people poured onto streets as the body of a slain boy was taken to the local graveyard. They raised high-pitched pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. Multiple funerals were held for Umar to accommodate the huge rush of people.
Eyewitnesses told media that scores of men and women wept bitterly as the body was being carried towards the graveyard. They added that Umar was laid to rest with his school uniform shirt over his body.
Reports said that women and children especially Umar’s classmates showered toffees and flowers on his body. Meanwhile, complete shutdown is being observed in Pulwama, Shopian, Islamabad and Kulgam districts to mourn the killing of youth by the troops. All shops and other business establishments are closed while traffic is off the roads.
Indian troops fired teargas shell in Khudwani area of Kulgam district after youth pelted stones on the vehicles of the forces’ personnel.
