Islamabad : European Union Special Envoy for Afghanistan Roland Kobia has urged upon Pakistan to play its role in initiating talks between the Afghanistan government and Taliban.
The special envoy said Pakistan can use its influence on the Afghan Taliban for initiating dialogue with the Afghan government before the next general elections in the country.
Pakistan and India should play their due role in establishing peace and prosperity in Afghanistan, Kobia further said.
Kobia urged Pakistan to force the Afghan Taliban to start talks with the Afghan government. The special envoy shared these views during his visit to the South Asian countries.
He said the South Asian region desperately looking for peace and stability, adding that regional states will have to play their due role in this regard.
The special envoy said through Taliban has accepted the responsibility of the bombs attack on a registration centre in Afghanistan but it didn’t refuse talk process with the Afghan government which is good sign, he said.
He said more than 15 countries are putting efforts to convince the Afghan Taliban for negotiation, adding Pakistan is leading the group.
Kobia further said the European Union accepts that Pakistan-lead talks with the Afghan Taliban can be successful.
He, however, said Russia and Iran have separately initiated talks with Taliban because they have feared that in the presence of Taliban, ISI can expand its circle of activities to other countries.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Afghan Taliban had accepted the responsibility of the attack on a voter registration centre in Kabul. Score of people were killed and injured in the attack.
