Rawalpindi: The residents of densely populated areas of Hokamdad Mohallah and Dhoke Khaba of Rawalpindi city have been forced to stage protests for the last 12 days due to the acute shortage of water.
Underground water level has considerably been decreased. Due to the indifference of the staffers more than 60 tubewells are closed and several developed technical faults.
In addition to the 46 Union Councils of the city, some unions of provincial constituency PP-6 for the supply of water out of WASA tubewells more than 60 tubewells are closed due to the lowering of the water table. To restore the water supply out of more than 350 tubewells, 20 tubewells have developed various faults causing acute shortage of water in Dhoke Khaba, Mohallah Hokimdad, Chah Sultan, Glass Factory, Dhoke Elahi Bux, Aria Mohallah, Dhoke Kala Khan, Pir Wadhai, Fauji Colony and Dhoke Hassu and certain densely populated areas are facing shortage of water affecting more than one lakh people.
Sources said the city has been facing shortage of approximately two million gallons of water which will touch a peak of 5 to 7 million gallons shortage in hot summer.
The Chairman citizen committee has warned that if their demands are not met they will resort to sit in in Liaquat Bagh.
