Sargodha: The Syndicate, University of Sargodha (UoS) has taken several important decisions regarding faculty appointments, academic consolidation, college affiliations and staff welfare.

In its third and last meeting of the year 2017 was held here, which was chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, who briefed the Syndicate on his academic reforms and developmental activities to improving the university’s institutional profile. The syndicate appreciated these efforts, especially the approval of Rs1.5 billion Federal development grant after a decade, and assured its full support in future.

It approved the appointment of more than 150 regular faculty members in different departments of University of Sargodha, including 8 Professors, 9 Associate Professors, 32 Assistant Professors and 80 Lecturers. These appointments, made through a merit-based transparent process, were recommended by two successive Selection Boards. The landmark decision will help overcome the problem of acute shortage of faculty, especially at Sargodha Medical College, due to which quality of education and hence university ranking were being compromised.

Moreover, the syndicate approved to disaffiliate 71 private sector colleges for their poor performance and falling short of the required quality standards. It also approved the establishment of Noon business school in recognition to the services of the Noon family for the cause of Pakistan. In addition, the Syndicate approved the launching of an evening program (certificate, diploma and MSc) in Military Sciences and Management. In a long awaited step, the revised Service Statues of the employees of Grades 1 to 21 were also recommended by the Syndicate.

The syndicate took serious notice of the subversive activities of Sociology Professor Mian Ghulam Yasin. A unanimous resolution against him for making false allegations on a fake stamp paper was also passed by the syndicate. The House recommended to remove Mian Ghulam Yasin from all the statutory bodies, including the office of Dean Social Sciences, for the smooth functioning of the University.
The syndicate approved to grant 15 PhD degrees to the candidates of different faculties. It also sanctioned an increase of 200-400% in the death compensation benefits for the families of the deceased employees of the University during their service by bringing these benefits at par with that of the government employees.
The faculty and other stakeholders of the University have widely appreciated the decisions of the syndicate. Before the induction of Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed as Vice Chancellor, University of Sargodha, this august body had remained dysfunctional for more than two years. Hence, the regular meetings of the University syndicate, with the latest one being the third one during 2017, are being perceived as a healthy symptom for the growth of University of Sargodha.
The meeting was attended by all syndicate members, including Prof Dr. Hassan Amir Shah, Vice Chancellor GCU Lahore, parliamentarians Dr. Nadia Aziz, Waris Kaloo and Gazanfar Cheena, representatives from HED and HEC, Secretary Education Board, and Principals of Jauharabad and Mianwali Colleges.
