ISLAMABAD: Sectarian differences have increased after the Riyadh conference, said Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz in the Senate on Thursday.

While briefing the Senate on Saudi Arabia-led military alliance, Aziz said a mechanism has not been decided for the deal yet. “But it is a wrong impression that the alliance would be against Iran.”

He added the focus of the alliance was terrorism.

Aziz was responding to a call-to-attention notice of Senator Farhatullah Babar, who believed the alliance to be against Iran.

Babar had requested attention be drawn to the media reports that quoted Saudi authorities as saying that the alliance would take action against rebel groups that pose a threat to any of its member countries. However, Aziz said the Saudi authorities were not talking about Iran.

About General (retid) Raheel Sharif, Senate Chairperson Raza Rabbani asked if the government has cut tries with him. To which Aziz said he was not sure about the terms and references of General (retd) Raheel Sharif.
