International Human Rights Day was observed around the globe on Saturday with call on everyone to stand up for someone’s rights. The day is observed to commemorate the adoption of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organizations to observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.The disrespect for basic human rights continues to be wide-spread in all parts of the globe. The rights include freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of farming an association, freedom of movement and freedom to show one’s dissent. India is among the countries of the world that had signed the universal declaration on human rights but it never show any respect for the rights of the people of Kashmir. New Delhi continued to respond legitimate demand of Kashmiri for fundamental right to self determination with bullets and guns and killed over 100,000 people in the part of Kashmir under its military occupation.During the past five months, there has been curfew and restrictions placed on the movement of the people. The Indian forces deployed in Kashmir use pellet guns callously as they are hunting the birds in the jungle. These brutal forces have blinded many people including minor children with pellet guns. The political leadership of Kashmir has been put behind the bars in police station or jails. India is also using media to get sadistic pleasures from the sufferings and plights of the people of Kashmir. On the other hand international community is busy in doing trade with India. Although some people in the world who care for rights of the people of Kashmir criticized Indian authorities for the human rights violation in Kashmir. The struggle of last five months is in continuation of struggle going on for the last seventy years. The people of Kashmir have shown that their struggle is continuing and it will continue in future. They are determined to take their freedom struggle to its logical end, despite all odds.If international rights bodies really care for rights of all human beings they will have to take strong notice of the killings and injuries, arrests and house arrests, raids and crackdowns, beating up of people and ransacking of houses in Kashmir and come to the rescue of unarmed Kashmiris who were at the receiving end of naked aggression and gross human rights violations perpetuated by the government forces. The silence of global community has emboldened India to commit war crimes and blatantly violate human rights of the Kashmir people. It is need of hour to hold India accountable for rights abuses and pressure her to grant people of Kashmir their legitimate rights, including right to self determination.
