PML-N leader Nehal Hashmi’s recent diatribe against the adversaries of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family could better be termed as an act of axing ones own feet. Hashmi, who is believed to be one amongst staunch loyalists of Nawaz Sharif, intentionally or unintentionally, has committed a huge gaffe that on one hand landed his own leader into troubled waters while on the other his off the cuff remarks at a very crucial point time had earned him the wrath of Supreme Court judges. Nehal’s remarks came as Godsend opportunity for opposition parties like PTI and PPP, which provided them the much needed ammunition to exploit and impugn the prime minister. The top brass of the party (PML-N) on the other hand stood severely embarrassed by Hashmi’s outburst that has triggered a sort of controversy all around. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for all the right reasons distanced himself from Hashmi’s highly objectionable remarks. Being the president of PML-N Sharif suspended him from party membership and obtained his resignation from the Senate. Pertinently, Hashmi’s speech had stirred up a nationwide controversy after his video went ‘viral’ on social media. In the video, the senator had warned that those conducting the investigation would be “taken to task”.The apex court judges took serious notice of the incident and expressed serious concern and rages at Nehal Hashmir’s threats. One of the Apex court judges remarked that the incumbent government was acting like Sicilian Mafia. Apparently perturbed over Supreme Court judge’s Sicilian remark, the government said that the comment was “against the code of conduct†of the apex court and very damaging to Pakistan’s reputation and integrity on an international forum.
Taking advantage of the situation the opposition parties have been making all out efforts to build pressure on the government by giving a notion that there was confrontation between government and institutions. Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah warned the government that clash between institutions would be harmful for democracy and security of the country. Rejecting the PPP leader’s contention, the Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that government’s reaction expressing sadness and regret over the statement of an Honourable judge did not mean that it was confrontation or collision between the government and the judiciary as difference of opinion could not be amounted to be confrontation. The interior minister in very categorical terms dispelled the impression that government was on a collision course with the judiciary. He said that equating difference of opinion to collision and using every issue for political mileage actually reflected a mindset that wanted to see collision and chaos rather than stability.Regardless of how political parties foresee the situation, it is high time that instead of politicizing the issue, the political parties should create a conducive atmosphere wherein JIT could be able to conduct a fair probe into the Panama case issue that would ultimately pave a way for across the board accountability in the country.
Hassan and Hussain Nawaz have vowed to keep on presenting themselves unless and until truth come out. Even His Excellency Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to appear before JIT if summoned. PML-N leadership too has already made it clear that it would cooperate with the JIT. So the fact is that the ruling party has set a precedent of presenting themselves for accountability, which is a good omen for the country.
