No religion preaches or supports any sort of oppression. It is a radicalized and extremist mindset which leads to the complete destruction of society. The atrocities being committed against the Rohingya highlights the fact that humanity is lost.
It is evident from the pictures and videos on social media that the cruel army of Burma with the help of Buddhist militants exploiting the unarmed, innocent and helpless Rohingya Muslims population. Most of these videos and pictures show the burnt houses and the beheaded, burnt dead bodies of Rohingya men, women and children. Fresh violence after decades of ethnic tensions has compelled tens of thousands of people to go to their neighboring countries.Described as the world’s most persecuted people, 1.1 million Rohingya people lives in Myanmar. They live predominately in Rakhine state with Buddhists for decades. They are descendants of Muslims (Persian and Arab traders), who came to Myanmar long time ago. Unlike the Buddhist community, they speak a language similar to the Bengali accent of Chittagong.
They are treated as illegal immigrants and Government of Myanmar treat them as a stateless people, denying them citizenship, impose restrictions on their worships, ethnic discrimination is at its peak and the military of Myanmar will not even tolerate their existence. It is reported that more than 500 people have been killed in the violence since.
There is irony in the involvement of Aung San Suu Kyi, a noble Laureate of peace, who brought the message of universal human rights in Myanmar. Led by her the Myanmar Government blocked all UN supplies of food and medicine for desperate Rohingyas.
Malala, the youngest ever noble peace prize winner urges her fellow laureate on Twitter, “Over the last several years I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment. I am still waiting for my fellow Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same.” The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, accused Myanmar of genocide against the Rohingya muslim minority said in a statement: “You watched the situation that Myanmar and Muslims are in. You saw how villages have been burned; humanity remained silent to the massacre in Myanmar.” He further said he would bring up the issue at the next UN general assembly in New York later this month, adding that he had already talked to the UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, as well as other Muslim leaders. One of the most agonizing aspects of current Rohingya crisis has been the silent attitude of the world community. Despite considering the Rohingyas ‘the most persecuted minority in the world’, the UN has yet done nothing significant beyond paying a lip service to this crisis. It has wasted much time in ascertaining the situation through forming a fact-finding commission. But why should we complain about the silence of world powers when even the entire Muslim world is silent? Despite the severe ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya, so called Muslim countries have adopted a criminal silence. Except for Turkey, no other country has raised voice against the government of Myanmar. Over the past few days, thousands of Muslims have been slaughtered, killed, hanged, tortured and driven out from the country, the misery continues. The OIC and other Muslim-majority alliances are not helping the oppressed Rohingya. The ongoing Rohingya persecution has become an instant source of rage, displeasure in the Muslim word. It has already sparked massive public demonstrations in many countries across the world.
If these atrocities continue unstopped then these sentiments would soon take a violent expression. It will also likely to fuel extremism and Jihadist tendencies in Muslim countries. A large number of individuals may join hands for the ‘Burmese Jihad’, marking this troubled region more destabilized. Therefore, before things get worse, the world community must promptly act to solve the Rohingya question.
The OIC, the UN and other international organisations must strongly condemn the violence against the Rohingya. They should take concrete steps to provide shelter to the displaced people. Muslim countries should stop trade ties with Myanmar until the violence is stopped. (May ALLAH be with Muslims)
