Islamabad : Senior Vice Chairman, Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) Rafique Suleman has condemned the detention of Pakistani rice exporter in Kenya and asked the government to intervene in this regard.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Senior Vice Chairman of REAP Rafique Suleman said some Indian and local traders in Kenya has mutually made a pre-planned conspiracy against Pakistani rice exporters which resulted in the detention of these Pakistani nationals by Kenyan authorities. “We strongly condemn the said shameful act,” he said.
Rafique said that Pakistani exporters were legally working in Kenya since many years. He refuted the charges imposed on Pakistani rice exporters and said that all allegations of money laundering, terrorist funding, fake passport and visas are baseless.
He said Kenya imports around 600,000 metric tons of rice annually, wherein Pakistan’s share is approx. 500,000 metric tons amounting to US$ 200 million. He said that Kenya government earns more than. US$ 100 Million revenue in the shape of various taxes and import duty with the help of import of Pakistani rice and Pakistani rice exporters are providing more than 90% of their food requirement. Under this situation, rice exports from Pakistan to Kenya will badly disturb which will not in favour of both the friendly countries, he added.
He added that due to the working of Pakistani rice exporters, Indian traders have lost their business and market share in Kenya and in rivalry they made a conspiracy plan to make false allegations against Pakistani exporters.
