ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema Islam-F Chief Maulana Fazl-ur Rehman on Friday said opponents think they have won following the Supreme Court’s verdict disqualifying Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Papers case.
The JUI-F leader, while addressing a press conference, said that the basis of Nawaz’s disqualification even surprised legal experts.
“We thought there would be a pile of evidence but when the verdict came, the PM was disqualified over the basis of money he did not withdraw,†said Fazl.
The JUI-F chief added that attempts to create a political crisis are being made.
Fazl further said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and other development projects will also be undermined due to the ongoing political situation.
The JUI-F chief said that now the case will be investigated under NAB, adding that even the rival party did not trust the institution.
The Supreme Court in its verdict announced disqualification of Prime Minister Sharif for failing to disclose his un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from UAE-based Capital FZE in his nomination papers for the 2013 elections.
Following the announcement of the verdict, Nawaz Sharif stepped down from the post of prime minister, a PML-N spokesman said.
Announcing their verdict in the Panama Papers case, all five judges ruled to send references against the premier, his children Maryam, Hussain and Hasan, son-in-law and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to an accountability court.
In the wake of the verdict, PML-N lawmakers expressed reservations over the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif and said it is likely that review petition will be filed.
