Washington/Islamabad: The US State Department spokesperson has said that Pakistan Foreign Office (FO) has contacted in connection with alleged mistreatment of Dr Aafia, in US jail.
In a message, Pakistan FO has said that Pakistani Dr Aafia Siddiqui who is in US jail is being mistreated therein. But we are making it clear that international human rights are upheld in treatment meted out to convicted criminals in the US”, spokesperson said in a statement.
The State Department, through its spokesperson, confirmed that Pakistani officials had reached out over alleged mistreatment of Dr Aafia, who is imprisoned at Texas’ Federal Medical Center, Carswell.
The conduct of US officials and prison-keepers with the prisoners is completely in accordance with the Constitution as well as the laws of the United States, the spokesperson said
Two days back FO spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal had said during weekly briefing that matter related to reports on mistreatment of Dr Aafia Siddiqui in Taxas jail has been raised with concerned authorities besides demanding probe into the matter.
The reports about death of Dr Aafia Siddiqui were circulating on social media last month. However these reports died down after Ayesha Farooqui, Pakistani counsul general in Taxas met Dr Aafia Siddiqui in Jail.
Dr Aafia Siddiqui is a scientist who is charged with attacking US troops in Afghanistan. Following the arrest of key commander of Al-Queda and alleged master mind of 9/11 attacks Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, Dr Aafia Siddiqui along with her three children had gone missing from Karachi.
A new turn in the matter of her disappearance came when US claimed to arrest her from Afghan province Ghazni in 2008.
Dr Aafia Siddiqui was indicted by a New York federal district court in September 2008 on charges of attempted murder and assault, stemming from an incident during an interview with the US authorities in Ghazni, Afghanistan — charges that she denied.
After 18 months in detention, she was tried and convicted in early 2010 and sentenced to 86 years in prison.
