Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday dismissed the prime minister’s statement that ‘aliens’ will conduct the forthcoming general elections, terming it against the spirit of the Constitution and its mandate.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, ECP spokesperson Altaf Hussain said persons holding top positions should avoid such controversial statements, saying such statements are equal to make mockery of the country’s institution.
It is responsibility of the ECP to conduct free and fair elections in the country and the institution is completely ready to hold the 2018 general elections.
Altaf further said, “No aliens are going to conduct the upcoming elections”, in fact the ECP is completely prepared for holding the elections.
The spokesperson said under the Article 218, holding free, fair neutral, and independence elections in the country is the ECP responsibility and it is ready for fulfilling its responsibility.
It is pertinent to mention here that on Friday during informal talks with journalists, the prime minister had said that the government will complete its term and the forthcoming elections will be free and fair. He had said that the elections will not be in 90 days but would be in 60 days and ‘aliens’ will conduct elections.
He, however, made it clear that the PML-N will participate in the general elections. Earlier, the former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, had also stated that the PML-N competition would not be with political parties but with ‘aliens’.
