RAWALPINDI: (Parliament Times) The president Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Ahmed Khan on Friday called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Qamar Javed Bajwa at GHQ in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. According to details the President AJK and the Army Chief discussed matters of mutual interest particularly situation on the Line of Control (LOC). The AJK president while apprising the COAS of the prevailing situation in the region also appreciated Pak Army’s contribution and role towards security and development in Azad Kashmir. There was an agreement to continue policy of restraint on Indian provocations as on both sides, it is Kashmiris who suffer from escalation.
According to sources the duo during the extra-ordinary meeting also discussed the much-debated issue of constitutional reforms in Azad Kashmir. So for as the constitutional reforms in AJK are concerned, the political and civil society groups in the region have been calling for amendment in Act 74 with a view to empower the local government. Besides the ruling party, opposition parties over the past several years have been seeking constitutional reforms in the liberated territory.
During the PPP led coalition government a draft regarding the amendments in the Act 74 was finalized and later on the unanimously agreed upon document which was signed by representatives of all political parties of the region was formally presented to federal government for the approval. Recently the incumbent PML-N government too had constituted a high level committee to finalize a draft of constitutional reforms in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The committee headed by Srtaj Aziz was assigned the task to finalize the draft before sending it to Prime Minister for approval after which a joint sitting of Kashmir Council and AJK legislative Assembly will accord the passage to those amendments. But so far there has been no progress on the matter despite the fact that the government as well as the opposition parties have been engaged in political point scoring on the issue.
