Pakistan warned the Afghan government of retaliatory action if Kabul failed to stop its forces from carrying out unprovoked firing and shelling on innocent civilians on the Pakistani side of the border. Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria pointed out that border between the two countries was clearly demarcated. He said that Pakistani teams were conducting census drive in its own area, which was Pakistan’s sovereign right, when Afghan security forces resorted to unprovoked firing and shelling. The spokesperson asked Afghanistan to stop firing on Pakistani forces. He said Pakistan reserved the right to respond to preserve its sovereignty and protect its people in case Afghanistan fails to stop firing incidents.
He said the violation took place at a time when the teams were undertaking population census in that area as part of a national exercise. The Afghan government was informed about the census being undertaken on Pakistan side of the border and exact names of the areas were also shared with the Afghan government, he said. The spokesperson demanded Afghan side should immediately withdraw those elements who were perpetrating these hostilities with a view to ensure peace and tranquillity on the border. Many people were killed as Afghan border forces opened fire on security personnel guarding a census team in Balochistan’s Chaman area. Inter-Services Public Relations said that Afghan Border Police opened fire on Frontier Corps personnel detailed for the security of a census team in Chaman, leaving one person dead and 18 injured. The death toll has subsequently risen to seven. Four FC Balochistan men are among those injured. ISPR said the firing by Afghan border guards comes despite the fact that Afghan authorities had been informed in advance about the census exercise in Pakistan and coordination was carried out through diplomatic and military channels. The Chaman border crossing has been sealed as Pakistani and Afghan troops continue to exchange fire.
Naked aggression of Afghanistan and its unprovoked firing on Pakistan’s territory during the census operation is very condemnable act. Afghanistan is following the line of India against Pakistan. Pakistan has many times raised the issue that India is not only involved in fomenting terrorism in Pakistan through Afghan’s soil but also spoiling Pak-Afghan relations. On the other hand Afghanistan is not taking any measure to stop militants’ infiltration in Pakistan and it is also not cooperating Pakistan on boarder management matters.
It may be recalled that militants have been crossing into Pakistani territory for the last many years lunching terrorists’ attacks on the security forces as well as the local people mostly in tribal belts in KP and Balochistan. Afghanistan government should put its house in order and should avoid in blaming others for its internal problems. Although Pakistan is showing full restraint and want to improve relations with Afghanistan because of strong ethnic and religious link but such situation cannot be tolerated more and it reserves the right to respond. International community should take notice of Indian’s nefarious role to utilize Afghan’s soil against Pakistan for its vested interests. Afghanistan should stop its hostile policy against Pakistan because it may lead to further aggravate the situation which will not be in its interest and also not for region.
