Karachi,(Parliament Times):Senator SaminaMumtazZehri, Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights, emphasized that eliminating the abhorrent and inhumane practice of Karo Kari demands not just laws, but their firm implementation and clear institutional accountability. She made these remarks while addressing an important session titled “Karo Kari: Bury This Practice” held at the Karachi Press Club. The event was organized by Dukhtaran-e-Karachi, a platform associated with the MuttahidaQaumi Movement – Pakistan, and was chaired by NasreenJalil. The session brought together lawmakers, legal professionals, and members of civil society. Senator Zehri actively participated in the discussion, sharing her perspective, which was warmly received by the audience. Participants commended her consistent efforts and clear stance, describing her as a strong and effective advocate for human rights, especially women’s protection. She stressed that Karo Kari cannot be justified as a cultural practice, but must be recognized for what it is: a serious human rights violation, where women are unlawfully killed in the name of so-called honor.

Expressing deep concern over the increasing number of such incidents, she referred to the case of RubinaChandio and reports indicating that 34 women have been killed in Sindh in just the past four months. She said these figures expose serious gaps in protection and law enforcement. She also strongly condemned a tragic incident in Balochistan where a minor girl was reportedly buried alive, calling it a reflection of deeply rooted feudal and patriarchal systems. She noted with concern that pressure from influential elements often weakens law enforcement, allowing such crimes to go unpunished.Reaffirming her commitment, Senator Zehri said it is the state’s duty to ensure justice is served without fear or favor, and to protect the dignity, safety, and fundamental rights of women at all costs. At the close of the session, participants reiterated their resolve to continue the struggle against this inhumane practice through platforms like Dukhtaran-e-Karachi until it is completely eradicated.
