Beijing,(Parliament Times):Xi Jinping has called for uninterrupted maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, stressing the need for stability during a phone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday.
The appeal comes as Beijing intensifies diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions linked to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. China expressed concern over growing instability in the region, particularly after a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran came under renewed pressure following the US seizure of an Iranian cargo vessel.
China, the largest importer of Iranian oil, has a significant stake in ensuring the waterway remains open. Since the outbreak of the conflict in February, Iran has largely restricted access to the strait for foreign vessels, while the United States has recently imposed a blockade targeting Iranian shipping.
According to Chinese state media, Xi emphasized that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open serves the shared interests of regional nations and the global community. He reiterated Beijing’s position in favor of an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, advocating for disputes in the Middle East to be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
China’s foreign ministry also voiced concern over what it described as the US “forced interception” of the Iranian ship, urging all parties to respect the ceasefire framework and avoid further escalation.
The call follows China’s broader diplomatic outreach in the region, including recent engagements with Gulf leaders, where Beijing has consistently promoted adherence to international law and regional stability.
Xi further underscored China’s support for Middle Eastern countries in shaping their own future, highlighting the importance of long-term peace and cooperative security in the region.
