Islamabad ,(Parliament Times): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has invited parliamentary leaders and heads of political parties to attend a high-level security briefing on the evolving regional situation, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Sanaullah said the meeting will be held tomorrow at 11:30am to deliberate on the country’s internal and regional security landscape, particularly in light of Pakistan’s response to recent provocative actions by the Afghan Taliban along the border and the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
“We have come to extend invitations to opposition leaders and heads of political parties on the instructions of the prime minister,” Sanaullah stated, urging political stakeholders to rise above partisan considerations and participate in the national interest. He added that opposition leaders would consult their respective parties before confirming their participation and stressed that no conditions should be attached to the briefing.
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai, however, proposed that the briefing be expanded to include the entire parliament instead of selected members. “Given the grave regional developments, parliament must be fully taken into confidence. We will respond by tomorrow morning after consulting our colleagues,” he said.
The development comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. According to US officials, the operation launched on February 28 targeted Iran’s naval and missile infrastructure.
On the western front, Pakistan continues to face cross-border militancy originating from Afghanistan. The Pakistan Armed Forces are carrying out ground and aerial operations under ‘Operation Ghazab lil-Haq’ against Afghan Taliban elements and Fitna al-Khawarij militants allegedly involved in recent border incursions.
Security operations were intensified after Afghan Taliban fighters reportedly engaged in unprovoked firing along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border on February 27. Since then, hundreds of militants have been killed or injured, and multiple checkposts have been destroyed or captured, according to official sources.
Meanwhile, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar confirmed that the prime minister will deliver an in-camera briefing to political leaders during the session, while Rana Sanaullah has been formally tasked with extending invitations to party heads.
