Kashmir Martyrs’ Day, is observed on 13 July of every year to pay tribute to the 22 innocent Kashmiri people who were martyred in 1931 while protesting against the cruel Dogra regime in front of the central jail Srinagar. This day marks a pivotal moment in the long-standing struggle of the Kashmiri people for their basic rights and justice. On July 13, 1931, thousands of Kashmiri people had gathered outside the central Jail Srinagar while demanding the open trial of mujahid Abdul Qadeer, who called for defiance against the oppressive Dogra rule. Instead of open trial the Dogra soldiers opened fire in compliance with orders of the Magistrate and as a result 22 innocent people martyred on the spot while a large numbers were injured. The martyrdom of these people ignited a wave of resistance and became a symbol of mass movement against the tyrannical Dogra rule, which was marked by severe oppression, heavy taxation, forced labor, and religious discrimination. The people of Jammu & Kashmir have since observed July 13 as Martyrs’ Day of Kashmir to honor the sacrifices of these individuals and to reaffirm their commitment to the struggle for freedom. People of J& K are struggling for their birth right the right of self-determination in the light of UN resolutions. The day is commemorated not only in both parts of Kashmir but also by Kashmiri people worldwide, including in Pakistan and other countries, through rallies, seminars, conferences and shutdowns. Leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference and other organizations pay glowing tributes to the martyrs, emphasizing that the struggle against Indian oppression will continue till freedom of the occupied region. This day is observed to remember the sacrifices of 1931 to inspire the current generation to keep the flame of freedom alive. In essence, July 13 serves as a beacon of courage and resistance, reminding the world of the Kashmiris’ enduring quest for justice and self-determination. It is a day to remember the martyrs who laid down their lives for their homeland and to renew the collective resolve to achieve lasting peace and freedom for Kashmir
