    Voice For Kashmir

    Shaheer Sajjad Khan
Kashmir is often called one of the most beautiful places on Earth. With snow capped mountains, serene valleys, and breathtaking lakes, it’s a land that feels like it belongs in poetry rather than in the middle of a decades long conflict. Yet, behind this natural beauty lies a deep, painful struggle—one that most of the world either forgets or chooses to ignore. Kashmir is divided between two nations: India and Pakistan, but the division runs deeper than geography. It’s not just a political issue; it has become a religious and human one, splitting communities between Hinduism and Islam, leaving the people of Kashmir caught in between. While we see global media covering the war in Ukraine, or the struggles in Syria and Palestine, Kashmir rarely gets the same attention. It’s strange how some conflicts are constantly discussed, while others are left in silence, even though the pain and suffering are just as real. The people of Kashmir, especially those living in Indian administered areas, have faced violence, restrictions, and years of tension. After India revoked Article 370 in 2019, which had granted the region a special status, life in Kashmir changed dramatically. Communication was cut off, curfews were enforced, and thousands were detained. What followed was one of the longest lockdowns in a democratic country, where people were shut in their homes not because of a virus but because of politics. I’ve seen videos that deeply disturbed me—streets filled with soldiers, families crying out for justice, and voices of Kashmiris that never seem to reach the rest of the world. It feels like their suffering has been erased from the headlines. And what’s worse is that the Indian media often presents this situation as normal, as if nothing is wrong, while on the ground, ordinary people are being silenced. I may only be 15, but I know injustice when I see it. And I know that if we stay quiet, we become part of the problem. This isn’t about choosing sides between countries. This is about acknowledging that human beings, people just like us, are being denied basic freedoms. Kashmir deserves peace, and Kashmiris deserve to live without fear. It’s time we stop treating it as just a territorial issue and recognize it as a human one. Raising our voices might not change every-thing overnight, but silence definitely won’t. So I’m speaking up, because even one voice, especially from someone young, can be the beginning of something bigger.
