Lahore, (PR) : In a historic and visionary move, the Punjab Cabinet has formally approved the province’s first-ever comprehensive Child Protection Policy, meticulously developed by the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau with vital technical support from UNICEF Pakistan. This milestone sets a new benchmark for child welfare in Pakistan and reflects Punjab’s unwavering commitment to securing a safe, nurturing, and just environment for every child.
Expressing profound gratitude, Chairperson Sarah Ahmad said, “I extend my heartfelt thanks to Chief Minister Punjab, Honorable Maryam Nawaz, for her steadfast dedication and leadership in championing the cause of children. The approval of this policy by the Punjab Cabinet is not just a policy decision—it is a beacon of hope and a historic milestone for the protection and empowerment of our children.”
She continued, “This policy embodies the Punjab government’s deep resolve to protect children’s rights and uphold their dignity. It marks a transformative step toward ending violence, abuse, exploitation, and neglect against children in our communities. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s unwavering focus on child rights underscores the vital importance of this initiative.”
Chairperson Sarah Ahmad highlighted the broader impact: “The Child Protection Policy serves as a comprehensive roadmap for child protection mechanisms across Punjab. It illuminates the path for all stakeholders—government, civil society, and communities—to collaboratively safeguard children’s wellbeing and create a safer tomorrow.”
This policy is the culmination of dedicated efforts that began over two years ago with the submission to the Home Department. Case management activities under the policy framework have been underway for over a year, demonstrating proactive implementation even prior to formal approval.
Punjab proudly becomes the first province in Pakistan to institutionalize a formal Child Protection Policy, setting a precedent and inspiring other regions to follow suit in prioritizing children’s rights and protection.
Chairperson Sarah Ahmad concluded, “This achievement heralds a new era of child protection in Punjab—a shining light of progress that will ensure our children grow up in safety, dignity, and hope.”
