Moscow -(PR) : A senior Russian general, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, in charge of nuclear protection forces, was killed in a bomb explosion. According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, the explosive device was concealed in an electric scooter.
The incident occurred on Tuesday outside a residential building on Ryazansky Prospekt in Moscow. The Investigative Committee confirmed that both Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov and his assistant lost their lives in the attack.
Russia’s state news agency TASS, quoting a law enforcement official, reported that the explosive device had a capacity of approximately 300 grams in TNT equivalent.
Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov served as the head of the Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defence Forces of the Russian Armed Forces. These special forces operate in hazardous environments, including radioactive, chemical, and biological contamination.
Local reports indicate that the area where the attack occurred lacked proper security camera coverage. Al Jazeera’s Maria Shapovalova reported from Moscow: “Residents of the residential complex where the explosive device went off have been complaining for years about the lack of proper video surveillance. The cameras were not recording the activities in those blocks of flats.”
According to media reports, General Igor Kirillov was not directly involved in combat operations. Instead, he played a significant role in exposing the activities of US bacteriological laboratories worldwide.
