Algeria, (PR) : The people of Algeria have re-elected Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune as President of the largest country and emerging economy of Africa as the preliminary results of early Presidential Election announced late on 08 Sep 2024. The polling was held on 07 Sep that received a big turnout from the public, especially from the youth and the women who were addressed as priority by Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune during his election campaign.
Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune contested as Independent candidate and secured votes 5,329,253 votes on 07 Sep 2024 with percentage of 94.65 %. The other candidates, Abdelaali Hassani Cherif of Movement of Society for Peace took 178,797 votes that are 3.18 % and Youcef Aouchiche of Socialist Forces Front got 122,146 votes with 2.17%.
The number of total votes cast is 5,630,196 and the number of registered voters is 24,351,551. Domestic turnout was estimated to be at around 48%, while turnout in overseas balloting was at 19.6%.
Overseas voting, covering around 800,000 Algerians, began on 2 September, while mobile polling stations servicing remote areas of Algeria began operating on 4 September. On 7 September, polling opened at 08:00 and was originally supposed to close at 19:00 before it was extended by an hour.
On 21 March 2024 the office of incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that the election would be held on 7 September. This was a surprise as the elections were anticipated to be held in December as they were in 2019.
Tebboune later explained that the date was the optimal time to hold the election “because it coincides with the end of the summer vacations and the start of the new school year”, hereby ensuring high turnout that is helpful in strengthening the state to make it able to face the multiple challenges ahead.
President’s Priorities
President Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune aims to achieve a GDP of $400 billion by 2027. He announced for young people to give them “their rightful place” through several measures and provisions, including “the creation of jobs with decent salaries.”
His other pledges are ; Algerian economy “the second largest in Africa,” – creating 450,000 jobs, building two (2) million housing units, increasing salaries, allowances, and university grants, allowance to housewives, and boosting citizens’ purchasing power, create 20,000 investment projects, support farmers, end wheat, corn, and barley imports, increase irrigated areas, and “definitively solve” the problem of drinking water supply “by the end of 2024, to “close the file on the status of teachers and paramedical staff by 2025”, reinforce child protection, review the administrative division, create new provinces, review the communal code, continue to address the concerns of the national community abroad, and further strengthen People’s National Army (PNA).
Election @ Islamabad Embassy
Algerian Embassy in Islamabad organised early presidential elections, 7 September 2024, voting operation started from 5 to 7 September, with a large participation of the Algerian community in Pakistan. H.E. Brahim Romani made necessary arrangements to facilitate to Algerian citizens residents in Pakistan to use their right of vote in a free and fair manner.
President of Arab Parliament
The President of the Arab Parliament, Adel Abdel Rahman Al-Assoumi, congratulated Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on his re-election, affirming in a statement that “this significant victory confirms the high confidence of the Algerian people in His Excellency’s leadership and their desire to continue the development journey he initiated during his first term.”
President Xi Welcomes Reelection of President of Algeria – Looks Forward to Expand, Deepen Bilateral Cooperation
On September 11, 2024, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Abdelmadjid Tebboune on his reelection as President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
Noting that China and Algeria enjoy traditional friendly relations, Xi Jinping said in recent years, under the joint guidance of the two presidents, bilateral relations have developed rapidly, cooperation in various fields has yielded fruitful results, the two countries have closely coordinated and cooperated in international affairs, and the traditional friendship has continued to deepen.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent a cable of congratulations to Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on 9 Sep on his re-election, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The King and Crown Prince wished the Algerian people further progress and prosperity.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke by telephone with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune HRH the Crown Prince expressed his congratulations to President Tebboune on his re-election for a new presidential term, wishing him success.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday evening, congratulating him on the success of the democratic process and his victory in the presidential elections for a new term.
President Abbas wished Algeria further progress and prosperity, praising the pioneering role it plays in serving the Palestinian cause, stressing the continuation of work between the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations.
In turn, President Tebboune thanked President Abbas for the call, stressing that the Palestinian cause was and will remain at the top of Algeria’s priorities.

President El-Sisi extended his congratulations to President Tebboune on his re-election in the presidential election and wished him success and prosperity.

The Algerian Election Comission announced on Septmber 8 that Tebboune garnered 95% of the vote to run the country for a second term.

President of the of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Sudan , General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan sent a written message on Monday congratulating President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on the occasion of his victory in the presidential elections.

Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has sent a message of congratulations to H.E. Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria on his re-election as President of that country. According to a Foreign Ministry release, President Boakai extended warmest congratulations to his Algerian counterpart on the occasion of his re-election, on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia and in his own name.

The president of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, congratulated his brother, the president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on the confidence renewed in him by the Algerian people and his re-election for a new term. The U.S. Department of State congratulated President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on his election victory, emphasising that the United States values its relationship with Algeria for enhancing security and peace both regionally and globally. The United States also expressed its willingness to strengthen bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

The President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, for his part, extended his “warmest” congratulations to the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on his re-election to the Presidency of the Republic, emphasizing that “relations with Algeria remain exceptional in all areas, notably in security and counterterrorism.”
Belarusian President ; Victory is Tribute to Service & Contribution
On 09 Sep Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko congratulated Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on a successful election campaign and his re-election for a second Presidential term.
“I believe that this victory is a tribute to your excellent service and contribution to the development of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. Minsk and Algeria are actively participating in the Non-Aligned Movement and sharing views on such important issues as building a just multipolar world, unacceptability of interference in sovereign countries’ affairs, and countering politically motivated sanctions pressure. Common goals contribute to mutual understanding between our peoples, transparency of bilateral relations, which are traditionally sincere and friendly,” the message of congratulations reads.
Aleksandr Lukashenko confirmed his readiness to pay a state visit to Algeria in the near future. “I hope that during a face-to-face meeting we will be able to outline joint steps aimed at expanding Belarus-Algeria cooperation in various areas,” the President emphasized.
