Philadelphia (Pennsylvania): Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump went head-to-head in their first debate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The debate, moderated by ABC News anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis, marked the first face-to-face encounter between the two candidates, following President Biden’s withdrawal from the race
Throughout the 90-minute debate, Harris effectively put Trump on the defensive with sharp critiques on issues such as immigration, the economy, and foreign policy. She accused Trump of belittling people and claimed foreign leaders were mocking him, which visibly unsettled the former president. Harris also targeted Trump’s proposed universal tariffs, labeling them a “Trump sales tax,” and criticized his handling of immigration policies.
Trump, in response, defended his record and attempted to redirect criticism towards the Biden administration’s economic policies. However, he often found himself rebutting rather than attacking, which analysts suggest may have favored Harris.
The debate, occurring just weeks before the election, highlighted the stark contrasts between the candidates and set the stage for further confrontations in the coming weeks.
