In the land of digital democracy campaigns, traditional tactics still prevail in many cities of Pakistan. A few months ago, during the election season, the campaign was in full swing. Every nominated candidate was busy with their campaign, attending Jalsas and corner meetings in their respective constituencies. Candidates from various parties, including PTI, PPP, and PML-N, were enticing their voters with everlasting promises and attention-grabbing speeches. These three parties have the majority of supporters compared to other parties in Pakistan. However, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) stood out in its unique election campaign compared to other parties. Instead of presenting an effective party manifesto, they were distributing solar panels and solar fans to people in their areas in exchange for precious votes. These electioneering tactics were mostly seen in rural Sindh, where people are still under the influence of Waderas, Mirs, Peers, and Sardars who wield significant control. Similarly, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has initiated a campaign to provide 200,000 solar panels, despite promising 200 free units in his election campaigns. However, Sindh grapples with numerous pressing issues. For instance, the education system in Sindh is in a deplorable state, and students still receive education under trees. Moreover, UNICEF recent report shows that in Sindh, 52% of the poorest children (58% girls) are out of school. Likewise, the education system in Sindh is in shambles, from a lack of furniture in schools to a lack of medicine in hospitals. In the 21st century, where Elon Musk has initiated tourism on Mars, students in Sindh still lack proper school infrastructure and furniture. Instead of providing furniture in schools and medical facilities in hospitals, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto is distributing solar panels. The Pakistan People’s Party must prioritize meaningful development over traditional tactics, focusing on education and essential services to truly benefit the people of Sindh. By addressing pressing issues like infrastructure, teacher training, and resource shortages, the party can empower citizens and drive lasting progress in Sindh.
