KARACHI/ SUKKUR. World Bank Mission visited and inspected the Rehabilitation and Modernization of Guddu and Sukkur Barrages

A World Bank mission comprising the Task Team leader Mr. Francois Onimus Senior Irrigation Engineer and Co Task Team Leader of World Bank Ms. Thiruni Liyanage Water Resource Management Specialist WB visited the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project accompanied with Project Director PMO SBIP Mr. Ghulam Muhuddin Mughal at Guddu Barrage Rehabilitation and Modernization Project.

They held the meeting with PMO-Project Management Office and PIC-Project Implementation Consultant staff visited Contractor Camp of Descon Engineering Company at left bank of Guddu Barrage upstream.

They visited and inspected workshop where a 5th set of Bulk Head Gate under preparation. 4 bulk head gate already working and installed along the Barrage at different bays.

The World Bank mission was informed that the 5th bulk head gate has been prepared to accelerate the progress of gate installation work. The mission of World Bank visited gate No. 60 where civil repair work of glacies and cill beam completed.

After site visit WB mission meeting held in the colony of PIC in Guest House where PIC Environment and Civil Engineer Ms. Carrie Eller briefed the progress of SBIP/G-2 progress. She informed that planned progress was 100% but achieved 57%.

A Security meeting was also held in the PIC office with ASP Kashmore at Kandhkot due to prevailing law and order situation at site.

WB was informed that 20 No. of gates will be arrived / reached at site in the month of September 2024 and in Oct 2024 installation work of gates of main barrage will be resumed.

WB mission visited Bay No. 36 of Sukkur Barrage where a trial run gate will be installed before flood season. PMO & PIC briefed about the progress of trial run gate.

WB Mission further visited Chinese Camp at left bank upstream of Sukkur Barrage. CRBC-China Road and Bridge Corporation, representative showed a fabricated trial run gate at workshop. PIC -Project Implementing Consultants DCRE-Deputy Chief Resident Engineer Shahyar Aslam briefed about the progress of work.

WB mission was informed that Progress of work on trial run gate, coffer dam design, they informed that trial run gate will be completed on 1st June 2024, sheet pile order for coffer dam have been placed, construction of gauge well at kotri barrage is in progress.

Ghulam Mohi u ddin Mughal Project Director Sindh Barrages Improvement Project emphasized to start the work of gauge well at Sukkur Barrage so that canal calibration work can be started.
Project Implementing Consultants Deputy Chief Resident Engineer further informed that the gate is design on fix wheel gate from stony roller.

PIC Environmental Specialist Miss Carrie Eller informed that during coffer dam pingers will be installed to safeguard the blind Indus Dolphin in river Indus upstream barrage during construction of coffer dam for gate installation. She further informed that Barrage road has been closed during work at barrage. Only school timing road is opened.

China Road and Bridge Construction Company informed that under Mechanical scope of work there are 56 main barrage gates will be replaced. 55 No. of Canal head regulator gates will also be replaced during 4 years plan. For trial run gate, at bay no. 36 caisson gate and downstream coffer dam has been installed, dewatering, civil repair of gate groove carried out, embedded parts installed, sand blasting of new trial run gate fabricated and installed upto 1st June 2024.

WB visited the Engineers Compound, newly constructed PIC Office, 5 No. Residential Bungalow, RE Resident, Laboratory, Prayer Area and Parking & PMO SBIP offices and Residences.

CRBC informed that design of main barrage gates; canal head regulator gates and their hoisting system have also be prepared and submitted to PIC.

CRBC Environment and Social, Health and Safety representative informed that joint survey with PIC and wild life department completed for safety of blind Indus dolphin.
