Lahore: A Rs 40 reduction in petrol price is like a breath of fresh air in the scorching sun of inflation. The pressure on the country’s economy, the burden of debt, the increasing rate of inflation at the global level and the increasing prices of petroleum products at the international level have put the people in the mill of inflation. There is a common complaint from everywhere that inflation has badly hit the people. Finally, some signs of improvement in the economy are visible, though very diminishing at this stage. The effects of which will also be seen by the people and soon these fruits will be available to the people.
But all this is not only related to the prices of petroleum products. Those who run affairs of the country has controlled the unrestrained flight of the dollar and in the last one week the value of the dollar has decreased by more than 30 rupees and now it is heard that the dollar will fall to Rs240 in three months. Similarly, a crackdown has been started against smuggling and now the signs show that the country’s economy will improve and people will get relief.
But the fruits of this improvement in the economy will reach the people only when the prices of food items and transportation fares will decrease. This responsibility belongs to the provincial governments and administration. Mobilizing the entire government missionary at once is a difficult step. The facts are very different and bitter which requires even more courage to admit. In fact, the nexus of weak administrative missionaries, age-old corruption networks in government institutions, bribery, hoarders, profiteers and black sheep in the government system have complicated the process of providing relief to the people. Therefore, after the process of economic improvement, to convey its fruits to the people, it is the role of the official machinery who needs self-purification and this is as difficult a stage as improving the economic conditions. Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, however, is leading a caretaker government in Punjab province and his mandate and challenges are different. But it is the fortune of Punjab that it has got such a caretaker Chief Minister who has managed the system even in these difficult situations and is getting the desired results. Mohsin Naqvi has a firm grip on the administrative machinery and is running all the affairs with full confidence and power. In fact, Mohsin Naqvi’s working style is so unique and comprehensive that he has established himself as a leader. Due to these qualities, he left no stone unturned in conveying the fruits of economic improvement to the people and within 48 hours, the inter-city and inter-city transport fares in the entire province have reduced by 15 to 10 percent. Even the fares of Chung Chi rickshaws plying within the cities have been reduced. The Chief Minister has fully mobilized the entire machinery to make the relief results available to the people. Price committees were mobilized throughout the province. Under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioners, the prices of all food items will be re-fixed in consultation with the business representatives in these committees. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, it is hoped that relief will be available to the people.
