I, want to bring world’s attention to the recent developments in Pakistan concerning the arrest of journalist Siddique Jan and the filing of fake cases against other journalists, including Moeed Peerzada, Sabir Shakir, and Imran Khan. This is nothing less than an attack on the freedom of speech in Pakistan.
The video footage of Siddique Jan’s arrest clearly shows that he was not apprehended by the police, but by people wearing traditional clothing who grabbed him by the neck and took him to an unknown location. This kind of behaviour towards journalists is unacceptable, and it sets a dangerous precedent for the state of journalism in Pakistan.
Moeed Peerzada, Sabir Shakir, and Imran Khan are also facing baseless charges and false FIRs. The government is using tactics like these to intimidate and silence journalists who dare to speak up against government corruption, injustices, and human rights violations. It’s crucial that the government and agencies respect the freedom of the press and stop harassing journalists.
Journalists play a vital role in keeping the public informed and ensuring accountability of those in power. Silencing them through arrests, filing fake cases, or other means is a direct attack on the freedom of speech and democracy. It’s time for the government to realise that journalists are not the enemy, but rather the defenders of the truth.
As a freelance journalist, it is my duty to raise my voice against any form of state oppression, especially when it targets fellow journalists. The case of Arshad Sharif, who was forced to leave the country on the same charges and later brutally murdered, is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in Pakistan.
Arshad Sharif’s mother is still seeking justice, but she feels like the Pakistani justice system is failing her. The courts, which should be the guardians of justice, seem to be hostage to the current government and establishment. This is a worrying trend, and if it continues, Pakistan may become a lawless state.
The murder of Arshad Sharif is not an isolated incident. Journalists in Pakistan have long been targeted for their reporting, and many have paid the ultimate price. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Pakistan is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, with 61 journalists killed since 1992.
As a journalist, I believe in the importance of a free and independent press. Journalists should be able to report without fear of reprisal or violence. The government has a responsibility to protect the rights of journalists and ensure their safety.
Imran Riaz Khan, has faced significant challenges since last year. He was incarcerated and during his time in jail, he struggled with his mental and physical health. Upon his release, the state government imposed a ban on his travel outside of the country. To make matters worse, Imran has also claimed that he was slow poisoned by the authorities.
Unfortunately, Imran’s story is not unique. Journalists in Pakistan are facing threats and intimidation on a regular basis. The situation is so severe that it is imperative for international human rights organisations and communities to intervene and apply pressure on the government. The ban on journalists must be lifted, and all fake cases filed against them must be removed. It is essential to ensure that journalists can work freely and safely without fear of retaliation or harm.
I also like to urge the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the government of Pakistan, and its agencies to release Siddique Jan and drop all false cases and FIRs against other journalists, including Imran Riaz Khan, Moeed Peerzada, Sabir Shakir, and others. It is time for the government to fulfil its promises to its citizens and uphold the values of freedom of speech and democracy.
