Nawaz Khan,
Literature is the art of discovering something extraordinary about ordinary people, and saying with ordinary words something extraordinary. Great literature is simply language charged to the utmost possible degree. That’s why it takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature. Literature of particular society plays a role of mirror to that society. It has had a major impact on the development of society. It has shaped civilisations, changed political system and exposed injustice. As a species we evolve every day and without that timestamp that literature gives us, we would know nothing about the past. Literature allows a person to step back in time and learn about life on Earth from the ones who walked before us. Instead of history it is literature which gives us information about various aspects more prominently than that of history where there is only one way traffic. Literature gives us a detailed preview of human experiences, allowing us to connect on basic level of desire and emotion. “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth”, said Kevin Nawn, an assistant professor of English literature at the American University in dubai. The youth should be educated in the great ideas of not only its own culture and time but other cultures and times as well. “By reading narratives we can empathise and understand others”, said Judith ceaser English professor at the American University of sharjah. He added that literature is thought provoking; it allows us to raise questions and so gives us a deeper understanding of issues and situations. Once a wise man named Roland barthes said that “Literature is the question minus the answer”. At first I didn’t get him but when i started reading literature i got to know that it is literature which makes us able to question the chaos going on around us. It is literature which points out issues which we think cannot be questioned. Now let’s discuss how many of us do read literature the way it should be. For the majority of us, our first encounter with literature is at the time where most of us don’t even know it. It is the time when our mothers or any other elders tell us the stories at night to make our mind refresh and fall us asleep comfortably. Onwards when we get to the school, college and then University there is no chance to be in touch with literature except those who keep their major as a literature at university level. Here the question can be asked from today’s youth that when was the last time you opened a book? And Ofcourse we are not talking about your chemistry textbook but a real book which has broaden your view about the world. But unfortunately we have always been sticked to the disciplines which stop us from broadmindedness, vast thinking and critical approach. Many students have the misconception that a degree in literature doesn’t hold a promising future. Other students say they would study literature, but as a minor or after obtaining a degree in another field first to secure our future, as getting a job with a degree in literature is fairly difficult. However, professors say that graduates with a degree in literature have plenty of opportunities in their careers. Not only does literature improve your understanding of others and communication skills, both characteristics sought after in the workplace, but it also presents you with many promising careers. A degree in literature can get you into journalism and broadcasting or teaching. And above all, to me the purpose of life is to grow. Grow and become better one, better listener and to connect better with those around you. No other field can teach us this better than literature.
