One of the famous quotes “Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions” reveals the true importance of a teacher. A teacher is highly valued and respected throughout the globe for his profession because a teacher is called the nation builder. In developed countries, the teaching profession is seen as on par with doctors. Unfortunately in Pakistan, particularly in Sindh Province, teachers are mostly seen on roads protesting for their rights. It has been a trend for teachers that if they want to get their rights, they have to pass a physical tests that includes police torture, dragging on roads, detention, facing water cannons and shelling of police. Since years, the teachers of Sindh are seen observing hunger strikes, sit-ins and camping for their rights. Despite thousand vacant positions of teachers, Sindh Government recruits teachers on contract and after continuous extension in their contracts, the government makes teachers protest for the regularization. Currently, IBA passed JESTs and ECTs are on protest in front of Sindh Assembly Karachi for their annual increment and regularization. It was for the first time that in the history of SELD, Sindh Education and Literacy Department that nearly 4 thousand JESTs and ECTs with their professional degree of B.Ed and M.ed were recruited by IBA testing service in 2018. Once again, keeping the contractual tradition continue, they were recruited for 3 years. Among these JESTs and ECTs there were many M.phill and PhD holders who left their precious jobs contribute their skills in teaching and besides this they also wanted to secure their future after getting government job. These M.phill holder scholars and PhD holder doctors are now seen on roads being dragged and tortured disrespectfully by the police at Karachi Press club. These educators and nation builders are treated viciously as if they were criminals. It has almost been a week that these educators are protesting in such harsh weather and heavy rains. Regretfully, the incumbent Education Minster Sindh Sayed Sardar Shah instead of understanding their woes and sorrows reacts with disheartening words that ” If these Teachers are true beloved to to their soil, they may go and teach the children”. Education Minister at least should know that during summer vacations, schools are closed and this may be considered on the record that IBA passed JESTs and ECTs have always protested on Sundays and public holiday because they never wanted to miss a single day from their schools. Teachers’ profession is only teaching, if they given their rights, they will never waste their energy, money and leave their homes for their rights. This is the responsibility of Ministry of Education to facilitate the teachers. Finally I would request to Chief Minister, Education Minister and Secretary Education Sindh to resolve the issues of IBA passed JESTs and ECTs. We shall never be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) by applying fictitious Educational Emergencies in province and by degrading the respect of teachers. The demands of IBA passed JESTs and ECTs regarding issuance of annual increment and their regularization are their sole rights. Their rights may be given to them before the Eid and so that they may celebrate Eid with their families and secure their future.
