Woes of Sui Gas in Balochistan

Mahnoor Javed
Sir, Balochistan is based on the south-eastern part of the Iranian plateau. It borders the geopolitical regions of the Middle East and South Asia. It is rich in inexhaustible and renewable resources; it is the second major supplier of natural gas in Pakistan. On the contrary, the Sui gas field is the biggest natural gas field in Pakistan which is located near Sui in Balochistan. The gas field was discovered in late 1952 and the commercial exploitation of the field began in 1955.However, the Sui gas comes out from Balochistan but unfortunately, the people of Balochistan are deprived of this greatest being. Only 14 towns in the whole of Balochistan are supplied with this gas, for instance, Quetta, Mastung, Kalat, Hub, and just a few of others but only in the center of the cities surrounding distances are deprived. Except for these cities other areas such as Turbat, Gawadar, Panjgoor, Khuzdaar, Zehri, Awaran, Jhao, Bela, Uthal, and many other places where the gas is not supplied. If it is provided in a city, then that is also equal not to available because of load shedding, especially in the winter season. The most aggravating matter is that the Sui gas comes out from Balochistan but is being supplied to other provinces through Balochistan and the people of Balochistan are forced to use wood and coal as fuel. People have to collect firewood barely and from a distance which makes their life extremely difficult. The gas is distributed in all provinces’ cities and villages except the province of Balochistan. Even though, all towns of Balochistan should be given first then provided to other provinces. Balochistan is the largest producer of natural gas in the country but sadly, it remains the most deprived province when it comes to the supply of Natural gas. The government is humbly requested to look upon the situation of Balochistan and solve the issues so that people can live peaceful life.
