Lawyers stage countrywide protest against appointment of junior judges in SC

ISLAMABAD:   The lawyers fraternity staged protest and did not appear in the courts all over the country against appointment of junior judges in Supreme Court (SC) ignoring the seniority.
The lawyers boycotted the courts on the call of Pakistan Bar Council, Supreme Court Bar Association, Khyber Pukhtunkhawa Bar Council, Sindh High Court Bar Association and other organizations.

They shut the doors of major court buildings and the clients could not enter into the courts. The hearing of the cases was affected due to non appearance of the lawyers and clients.
The court staffers called the name of clients and lawyers but no one appeared.

A heavy contingent of police was deployed when the lawyers gathered in Supreme Court for protest. Court parking was shut due to security concerns.

The lawyers demanded the seniority norms were not kept in view in the appointment of judges. in SC be appointed on the basis of seniority. Our protest is peaceful.

The lawyers chanted slogans against the chief justice and no lawyer of any client appeared before the chief justice. Only law officers appeared in SC.

Judicial commission will meet under the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmad with reference to considering the matter of elevating Lahore High Court judge Justice Ayesha Malik as SC judge. Justice Ayesha A Malik is at No 4 in seniority list of Lahore High Court.
