ISLAMABAD, (Parliament Times) :An important meeting was held in collaboration with the Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) and the Ministry of Health on the need to increase the FED on Sugar Sweetened Beverages (SSB)). The special guest was Joint Secretary Ministry of Health Shehzad Saleem. Samra Mazhar, Deputy Director, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Sanaullah Ghman, General Secretary, Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) hosted the event Accompanying Pran on the occasion were Vice Chancellor Health Services Academy Shehzad Ali Khan, Coordinator Nutrition Dr Khawaja Masood Ahmed, Munawar Hussain from Gahi, Shehzad Alam from WHO, Noorin Nishtar, Dr Noorin Arshad from UNICEF, Alia Habib from CSA. The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran.
The meeting was aimed at curbing the growing incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), one of the main reasons being to educate the public about the harmful effects of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) and to increase the Federal Excise Duty (FED). The key points of the source were discussed by the Minister.
The participants of the meeting said that more than 58% of deaths in Pakistan are due to NCDs.The prevention of causal factors is a matter of urgency.FED has not been increased for the last two years on sweet drinks (SSBs) which are considered to be one of the major causes of heart, cancer, obesity, stroke, dental, stomach, liver and other diseases.In other countries, the implementation of the sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) practice has not only increased revenue, but also reduced the burden of disease.
Participants say FED is an effective way to prevent the effects of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) , And to inform the public at the grassroots level,Adverse effects of the Ministry of Health and other ministries Should be discussed. As a result of non-increase in FED, the industry is doing well,It is sad to say that healthy food is expensive and unhealthy items are sold cheaply.Legislation is urgently needed, Issue health public messages so that people and institutions understand the need for it. sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) are selling best in educational institutions, hospitals and parks,The Government should take practical steps to reduce the use of Price sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) in these places.Import of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) in advocacy should be reduced, health policy should be made in our country like all over the world. sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) are a major cause of illness,so Increase FED , So as to increase revenue and reduce the burden of diseases.
