Karachi: The annual meeting of CPNE was held at a private hotel in Karachi on Tuesday, May 25, with all the SOPs of Corona under the chairmanship of CPNE President Arif Nizami. Arif Nizami, President, Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), while addressing the annual general meeting has said that the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has reiterated its commitment to meet the new challenges facing the media that all kinds of political, state, non-state and economic pressures on the media and freedom of the press will not be tolerated. New PEMRA directives and orders the forcible removal of newspaper stalls, including unannounced raids on media outlets and newspaper printing presses, is a serious obstacle to the promotion of independent media. He also expressed full confidence in the present leadership, while the General Assembly also elected Ali Kazim Waheed, Group Editor, Daily Times, as Senior Vice President. Meanwhile, the general meeting was attended by a large number of CPNE members from across the country. The meeting discussed in detail the issues facing freedom of expression, freedom of press, especially print media. Despite the approval of the 85/15 payment formula by the federal government, PID has slowed down its direct payment of advertising dues on which extreme concern was expressed. However, the General Assembly unanimously passed a resolution at the Annual General Meeting approving all officials, including the current Standing Committee, to continue their responsibilities until May 2022
