ISLAMABAD, (Parliament Times) : The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms, in a joint effort with the Government of Pakistan, were briefed on a report entitled “Guidelines for Better Food”.
Consumption of sweets, salt and fat in a poor diet is a major cause of obesity.Which leads to premature death. Dietary and lifestyle changes Overweight and obesity cause many CNCD diseases as well as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer and others.Of the 56 million deaths worldwide in 2012, NCDs were a major cause of pre-death for 38 million people in developed and developing countries.
The 2018 report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms, Government of Pakistan also stated that 10 to 11 percent of adults in Pakistan aged 25 years and above are suffering from diabetes, And is expected to increase to 14.5 million by 2025.
Heart disease is a leading cause of disability and premature death in adults worldwide.Excessive consumption of sugar and sugary drinks can lead to fatal diseases in children and adults, including heart disease due to deficiency of iron, vitamin A, calcium, vitamin D, zinc and iodine.
According to a public survey conducted by PHRC on Sugar Drinks, about 80% supported the government to take steps to discourage the consumption of Sugar Drinks. 72% support tax hike on SSB,While 65% of the people insisted on spending the collected revenue only on health plans.
General Secretary Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) Sana Ullah Ghumman while expressing his views on the report said that Excessive use of anything is bad for your health, and too much use sugary drinks is a major cause of NCDs, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes.If the government imposes the practice of sugar drinks, , So with the increase in revenue there will be a decrease in diseases.
