What is language? The means by which people communicate with each other. The most powerful instrument ‘Language’ helps to preserve and safeguard the cultural diversity of a nation. Yesterday, on 21st February, International Mother Language Day was celebrated across the globe with an evangelism to promote awareness of language and cultural diversity. Bordered by Afghanistan, China, India and Iran, PAKISTAN is very diverse in her culture. More than 2,301 languages are spoken in Asia. In 2015, Ulrich Ammon, the then professor of languages at the University of Duesseldorf, conducted the study about the scope and ranking of languages and maintained that about two-third of the world’s population speaks 12 major languages. For this, he took 15 years to accomplish his project. According to his survey, 1.39 billion people speak Chinese, while 588 million people speak Urdu. At that time, Urdu: The national language of Pakistan was declared as the second most spoken language in the world. But, 21st February is the day to mark the mother language day not a national language day. Therefore, for Pakistan, which is a multicultural and ethinc country, it is difficult to determine the actual ranking of languages being spoken in 5 Provinces of the state. The majority of the people living in Pakistan do not speak Urdu but talk in their provincial languages. For example, people of Sindh speak Sindhi, Saraiki, Gujrati and Kacchi, Punjab’s people speak Punjabi and Saraiki, Balochistan’s speak Balochi, Brahvi, Pushto. KPK’s communication language is Pashto, Hindko, Dari and in GB Shina, Brushasi, Khwar, Wakhi and Balti are spoken. The people living in Pakistan love to speak their mother tongue. Ethnologue: A language reference published 2019 edition based in the USA, ranks Western Punjabi on 9th in the list of languages spoken by approximately 10 million people. Moreover, Eastern Punjabi on 40th, Urdu on 20th, Gujrati on 24th, Sindhi on 48th, Northern Pashto on 56th, and Saraiki on 59th.
