ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has ordered federation and Sindh government to stop cultivation on the land in Kacha area along side rivers forthwith and ensure construction of Nai Gaj dam.
The court also ordered federal and provincial governments to carry our tree plantation along side rivers and canals for forestation.
A two members bench of SC presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmad took up Nai Gaj dam construction case for hearing Wednesday.
The CJP remarked during the hearing of the case cultivation cannot be done on the land in Kacha area along -side rivers. Climate changes can lead to water shortfall. There is no scheme of tree plantation along -side rivers and canals. Tree plantation process has come to end. The petals of trees should not be planted along -side rivers and canals. At least tree of 6 feet size be planted and it should be made secure.
Joint secretary ministry of water and energy told the court ECNEC has not approved PC-1 of Nai Gaj dam so far.
Additional Advocate General told the court “our government launched billion tree Tsunami project.
The court while summoning progress report from all the governments on tree plantation within one month and time line from federation and Sindh government on construction of Nai Gaj dam adjourned the hearing of the case for one month.
