Rawalpindi: (Parliament Times) Stakeholders Workshop on Sustainable Development Indicator on IWRM (6.5.1) sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030) Integrated Water Resources Management and Pakistan, Status, Challenges and Opportunities held here today. The workshop was organized by Pakistan water Partnership with the collaboration of UNEP, Ministry of Water Resources and Global Water Partnership. The objective of the workshop was to deliberate upon 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are an urgent call for action by all countries developed and developing in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand in hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth all while tacking climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. The experts revealed that over the past several decades, ever-growing demands for – and misuse of water resources has increased the risks of pollution and severe water stress in many parts of the world. The frequency and intensity of local water crises have been increasing, with serious implications for public health, environmental sustainability, food and energy security, and economic development. It was stated that billions of people throughout the world still lack access to safely managed water and sanitation services and basic hand washing facilities at home, which are critical to preventing spreading the spread of COVID-19. Immediate action to improve Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for all (WASH) is critical to presenting infection and containing its spread. Highlighting Clean Water and Sanitation it was stated that Goal 6 of the development agenda talks about ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation, eight specific targets have been formulated to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for all, to end open defecation with special attention given to the needs of women and girls. Chief Engineer Advisor Chairman Federal Flood Commission Ahmed Kamal and Ex Member WAPDA Sardar Muhammad Tariq informed that basic objective of workshop to gage the working and priorities of different stakeholders to achieve the targets of SDG’s. Dr Pervaiz Ameer, Imran Qureshi and other experts also share their suggestions.
