Karachi: Government side son Thursday sought more time from the Sindh High Court (SHC) for filing comments on a constitutional petition of Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor against lodging of criminal case FIRs against drivers for violation of one-way traffic law.

From government side, Advocate General Sindh, DSP Traffic Preedy, appeared before the court during the hearing of constitutional petition number 657/2020 and requested for more time to file reply and detailed report.

PDP lawyer Irfan Aziz Advocate prayed the court that DIG Traffic should be summoned before the court along with the record of lodged FIRs and cases. He maintained that heavy fines were slapped on drivers for violation of one-way, besides they were arrested and criminal cases lodged against them, which would darken their future. He said the FIRs should be quashed and recovered fine amount returned back and the arrested citizens should be released.

However, the bench of SHC comprising Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro and Justice Irshad Ali adjourned the hearing till March 16, directing Advocate General and traffic police to appear before the court along with the necessary record.

However, later talking to media outside the SHC premises, PDP Chairman Altaf Shakoor said all citizens should respect the traffic laws. He said violation of traffic laws should be avoided at all costs. He said challans and fines in cases of traffic rule violation could be justified but lodging criminal cases against drivers and arresting them is not acceptable. He said these criminal cases would result in criminal record and darken future of our young generation.

He asked the Sindh government to improve condition of roads and streets in Karachi and give the megacity a respectable public transport system. He said they would continue to support the cause of quashing FIRs and cases against drivers for violation of one-way.
