Azad Kashmir day is celebrated on 24th October with traditional zest and national fervor all across the liberated territory of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The day is observed every year to mark the formation of the first revolutionary government set up under the leadership of ‘Ghazi-e- Millat’ Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan. Stretching over an area of nearly 5000 square miles out of the total areas of 84471 square miles the territory known as state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir was liberated from the despotic Dogra rulers by its brave and courageous people after rendering enormous sacrifices. An area of 28,000 square miles was also liberated by Gilgit Scouts and now it forms Northern Areas (Gilgit-Baltistan) which is being administered by the Federal Government of Pakistan. Over the past 71 years the people of the liberated territory has witnessed enormous development in almost every sphere of life. The pattern of the State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir is almost the same which is prevailing in Pakistan. Besides Executive and the Legislature, the AJK now has an independent Judiciary as well. The AJK is a self-governing state with its own prime minister, president, a separate flag and its legislature. But the fact is that the AJK government had defined itself as a “War Council” formed with the sole objective of liberating the parts of J&K that remained under Indian control. During the years the successive governments in the region have significantly contributed in improving the lives of its people, infrastructural development and establishing a democratic setup whereby people have right to elect government and representatives of their own choice on the basis of adult franchise. But so far as it’s sole objective of liberating the Indian held territory of Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, the AJK as a state, mostly referred as base camp for the liberation of Indian occupied Kashmir, has to do a lot more to achieve this cherished goal for which Kashmiris have rendered unprecedented sacrifices over the years. Especially, the AJK government’s role and responsibilities viz-a-viz the freedom struggle of Kashmir have increased manifold after the Indian government’s attempted move to annex occupied Kashmir. As per the international covenants Jammu and Kashmir is disputed territory and as per the UNSC resolutions India cannot change the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir. It is hoped that the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir would discharge its duties and will continue struggle for which the government in the base camp was established 72 years ago. We are sure that the sacrifices rendered by the people of Kashmir will bear fruit soon and the day is not far off when the Kashmiri people, who have scripted the history with their blood, will succeed in their struggle and Kashmir will be free from Indian bondage.
