Islamabad: (Parliament Times) While condemning the arrest of Khyber News reporter and senior journalist Gohar Wazir PFUJ has termed this act contrary to the norms of journalism.
Demanding his immediate release the PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Ayub Jan Sarhandi, in a joint statement issued here Wednesday, warned the government that restrictions on the Press won’t be tolerated at any cost. They said that access to information is the fundamental right as enshrined in the Constitution. They said that events taking place in FATA are a matter of concern, and it is the right of people of Pakistan to know the truth. In today’s era, restrictions imposed on truth can create serious circumstances, they added.
They demanded from the government to allow independent reporting of events occurring in FATA.
They said investigation should be made that on whose orders arrest of the journalist took place under MPO who was performing his professional duties.
The PFUJ leaders while strongly condemning violence on journalist Pervaiz Mughal during the coverage Pakistan People’s Party demonstration in Islamabad said that such incidents undermine democracy and are tantamount to interference in the professional responsibilities of journalists in a democratic government and such interference can only be declared tyrant tactics against the freedom of the Press. They demanded from the government to stop such incidents.
