Target of planting 54 crore saplings in AJK under Billion Tree a project of Pakistani PM, says AJK PM


ISLAMABAD:   (Parliament Times)     The AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan said target of planting 54 crore saplings in AJK has been set under Billion Tree Project of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He was talking to media here on Friday after attending a high level meeting in Islamabad chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding environment changes.

The Premier said PC-I worth 20 billion rupees has been prepared to achieve the target of tree plantation in the State. Prime Minister Khan would soon convene a high level meeting on environment and other issues AJK faces, he disclosed. He said the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction on the steps taken by AJK government for environment issues and assured all possible cooperation of federal government to state government.

The meeting was attended by chief minister Punjab Usman Buzdar, chief minister KP Mehmood Khan and representatives of Balochistan and Sindh governments.

The meeting exchanged views on strategies to combat the challenges arisen out of environment changes.

AJK prime minister told the meeting that to protect the natural atmosphere in the state and to prevent cutting of woods in the upper areas the project of energy mix was also under consideration. He said long term policy would have to be adopted for protection of environment resources in the upper areas in AJK.

Mr. Haider said Prime Minister Khan expressing deep concern on the environmental issues caused by hydropower projects in AJK directed all the departments for their immediate resolution. In this connection a unanimous formula with federal government was being discussed which would be monitored by Prime Minister of Pakistan himself. He said PM Khan also directed for implementation of environment study on mega hydropower projects.

The AJK Prime Minister told the meeting about the steps taken by his government for setting up of climate centers which were more than the provinces of the country and made an action plan to combat this challenge. He said AJK education department incorporated necessary things in syllabus in this regard which were appreciated by PM Khan and other participants of the meeting.

Mr. Haider told the meeting that his government planted 30 million saplings at a cost of 1200 million at an area of 54317 acres in AJK in the past 3 years. Its success percentage was 78. He said work was done on water shed management. He added that AJK government had made a pragmatic strategy regarding Billion Trees Project of Prime Minister Imran Khan. He said we have capacity and capability to meet this challenge.
