Rawalpindi: (Parliament Times) A ceremony was held by Emergency Medicine Advisory group (EMAG) and Pakistan Society of Emergency Medicine (PSEM) to launch two initiatives. The ELS course and the inauguration of Pakistan first Journal of Emergency Medicine. Emergency Medicine is the newly emerging and very important field which deals with the people who need care that cannot wait. This specialized care deals with all sorts of diseases in all age groups. Pakistan is one of those Countries that has established the training of Emergency Medicine through CPSP. Since 2010 college started this 5 years training in two institutions in Pakistan which has grown into 7 institutions now and 5 doctors has passed FCPS in Emergency Medicine.
Pakistan Society of Emergency Medicine PSEM was created in 2017 and it serves to create awareness regarding this important field. Pakistan Society of Emergency Medicine helps promote scientific research through its journal and other means. The ceremony held locally in Islamabad to inaugurate the journal of Emergency Medicine called SAJEM ( south Asian Journal of Emergency medicine) The Journal seeks to present cutting edge research on the topic of Emergency Medicine especially for the perspective of south east Asia the ceremony was also the inauguration of ELS course .The ELS (Emergency Life Support) course was designed by Australian Emergency Physicians for the rural Australia and later on tailored for the low resource countries. In collaboration with PSEM they wanted to train local emergency doctors in matterswhere time and life becomes the most precious and the most at stake. PSEM will then be organizing this course locally to slowly train emergency doctors locally. The ceremony was attended by eminent physician from the emergency medicine community of Pakistan.
Dr Aysha (Executive of EMAG) told the audience that our advisory group is going to support all EM activities in Pakistan like the took this initiative of becoming the publisher of SAJEM. Dr. Alan Tankel from Australia informed attendees of the of the importance of the course and the impact it has created in low resource countries. Dr. Abdus Salam Khan , President of the PSEM shared the history of society and the struggle that Emergency Physician are going through. Hestressed on the importance of the team work and collaboration to provide the quality Emergency care and also importance of understanding about the Golden hour of treatment .His opinion was that it is utmost important for Pakistan to come together and help us built this Emergency Medicine community.
CPSP counsellor Dr. Shoaib Shafi informed the audience regarding role of CPSP in developing Emergency Medicine. He recounted those days when CPSP with the help of only few doctors and two institution to start this discipline. He said that persistent struggle and continued support of CPSP enabled the Emergency Medicine to start flourishing. He informed that College of Physicians and Surgeon Pakistan is talking to different entities in UK and Ireland so that the trainees can go there and learn and come back to serve the country. Dr. Shoaib Shafi was hopeful that the public sector hospitals would start training in the field of Emergency medicine and play their role in the propagation of Emergency medicine in Pakistan. Dr. Shafi expected the Government to involve the stakeholders from the private sector, College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and also the society of Emergency medicine to come together and create the safety net of quality emergency medicine for all the citizens of Pakistan.
Prof. Abdul Bari the chief guest of the ceremony praised the Pakistan Society for their struggle to bring the Emergency Medicine in the forefront. He also wanted the public hospital to come up and play their role in training and delivering the quality emergency care to the citizen of Pakistan.
In the end Dr. Khawaja Junaid Mustafa general secretary of PSEM and Dean faculty of Emergency Medicine CPSP thanked everyone to be here especially CPSP, the Shifa International and its management including Dr. Manzoor Qazi and Dr. Habib ur Rehman. He also thanked the Australian consultants including dr. Farida Khawaja for sparing their time to teach ELS course in Pakistan. Cake cutting ceremony to inaugurate the South Asian Journal of Emergency medicine was held at the end of the ceremony.
