Govt to ensure across the board accountability of corrupt: PM

LAHORE: Prime Minister Imran Khan has said the government will ensure across the board accountability of the corrupt, while blackmailing and protests could not deter her from his commitment to eradicating corruption.
In his first press conference as Prime Minister in Lahore, he said drives against corruption did not succeed in the past as these targeted the opposition only.
Responding to opposition’s allegations of political victimization, the prime minister said Shahbaz Sharif was arrested in a reference, which was filed almost ten months ago by the NAB.
Imran Khan said he would not spare any corrupt and no deal is possible under him. He said PML-N is free to protest on roads and in the assembly.
The Prime Minister said the government would introduce Whistleblower and Witness Protection Acts next week and twenty per cent money will be given to the person, who helps the government in recovering the money from the corrupt.
He said Pakistan’s economy had great potential and he is confident that it will bounce back very soon as the country is gifted with precious minerals and other resources.
He said Asset Recovery Unit comprising members from the FIA, FBR and State Bank of Pakistan was set up in the Prime Minister House. The government had signed Memorandum of Understanding with UK while it is seeking similar MoUs with Switzerland and UAE governments.
About the economic challenges, he said the government is weighing various options before going to the IMF for assistance. He said some friendly countries have been approached to put some money in the SBP so that the government did not have to go to the IMF.
