Islamabad: (Parliament Times) The former convener of All Parties Hurriyat Conference Pak chapter and vice president of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) Mehmood Ahmed Saghar has appreciated the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterre’s recent statement in which he had voiced his support for international investigation into the atrocities being committed by the Indian forces in Kashmir.
” The statement of UN Chief is a positive development, which speaks volumes about growing concerns and realisation at global level vis-à-vis the peaceful settlement of lingering Kashmir dispute that as a matter of fact is the major cause and the consequence of rights violations in the region”, Saghar said in a statement issued here on Tuesday. Now that the UN chief had taken a bold and clear cut stand on the matter, Saghar added that there was a dire need that the international community must realize the gravity of the situation and come forward in a big way to impress upon New Delhi to accept the UNHCR demand for establishment of Commission of Inquiry to conduct comprehensive independent international investigation into the human rights violations committed by its troops in the held territory besides paving a way for holding a free and fair plebiscite so that people of the region could exercise their birth right, guaranteed to them by no less an authority than the United Nations.
Regarding the mediation offers from the United Nations DFP leader said that Kashmiris have always supported and welcomed such kind of offers but India rejects the idea by simply paddling same age-old baseless narratives and fallacious reasoning vis-à-vis the Kashmir dispute. “Rather than weaving cobwebs of confusion it is time for New Delhi to accept this bitter reality that a political solution to the Kashmir problem was the only way forward”, Saghar said.
Expressing his deep concern over the prevailing political and human rights situation in the restive region the DFP leader said that innocent and unarmed people were being subjected to worst kind of oppression and suppression by the Indian forces. He said that Hurriyat leaders have been caged in different jails in and outside the valley on the pretext of trumped of charges. Referring to continuous detention of incarcerated party president Shabir Ahmed Shah who languishing in Tihar jail for the past one year Saghar said that dozens of top rank Hurriyat leaders including Shabir Ahmed Shah have been detained in the notorious jail where they have been subjected to inhuman treatment.
Voicing his grave concern over Shah’s declining health condition of he said that the incarcerated leader was facing worst situation in Tihar jail. “The ailing leader who is suffering from multiple ailments is even denied suitable medical treatment”, he added.
Demanding early release of all political prisoners the DFP leader appealed the world Human Rights bodies to take effective notice of the plight of Kashmiri prisoners and impress upon India to release Shah and other political prisoners languishing in jails.
