Rawalpindi( Daily P.Times) : Three top heavyweights of main political parties including PML-N, PPP and PTI are lined up to face each other in the forthcoming general election 2018 from NA-58 Rawalpindi II of Tehsil Gujar Khan. PPP Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, PTI Ch. Muhammad Azeem and PML-N Raja Javed Ikhlas are contesting from NA-58 as constituency named NA-51 in last general election of 2013.
NA-58 of Tehsil Gujar Khan is approximately 55 kilometres southeast of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan and 220 km to the north west of Lahore, capital of Punjab. It is bounded on the north by Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Attock, on the south by Jhelum, Lahore and Gujrat, on the east by Azad Kashmir and Kahuta and on the west by Chakwal and Khushab. Located in the heart of the Potohar region, the city and surrounding region is renowned for its martial culture and is sometimes referred to as the ‘Land of the Shaheed’, having produced two recipients of the Nishan-i-Haider. The area of this constituency consists of Gujjar Khan Tehsil of Pindi District. Localities of this constituency include Mandra, Jhangal, Daultala, Devy, Sukho, Gujar Khan, Guliana, Kuntrilla, Sayid Kasran, Qazian, Jatli and Kangar.
Raja Biradri is the largest biradri of this constituency which is playing a dominant role in the politics of the area.In NA-58, the largest clan, the Rajputs, encompassing the Janjuas, Bhattis and Ghakars. The second largest biradari is the Arains Gujjars account for around 10% of the population, and the rest are Awans, Jatts and Qureshis.
Political analysts predict that PTI candidate Ch. Muhammad Azeem could do the wonder due to his social works and close coordination with people of his constituency though he not a big name in the area as compared to his rival candidates like Raja Javed Ikhlas and PPP Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.PML-N Raja Javed Ikhals had badly defeated PPP candidate Raja Pervaiz Ashraf in the last general election 2013 but currently Raja Javed Ikhlas is not so firm against PTI Ch. Mohammad Azeem and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.Soon after winning the last general election PML-N leadership including former Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and Raja Javed Ikhlas had promised to get Tehsil Gujar Khan of District status and also committed to establish a modern hospital in Tehsil but today PML-N had failed to fulfill the promises.The inner sources stated that during the past five years the performance of Javed Ikhlas is not up to the mark. Area people viewed that PML-N spinally Raja Javed Ikhal did not fulfilled the most of the promises that he made.Sources stated that PPP candidate Raja Pervaiz Ashraf could score massive votes in this constituency. Majority of area people gives completion of Mandar-Chawal road construction credit to Raja Pervaiz Asharf. Mega projects like Mandra Chakwal Road, Sohawa Chakwal Road, Mandra Gas Project and other projects had launched in NA-51 by Ashraf through utilisation of Prime Minister’s discretionary funds may play a pivotal role in his victory. Currently the popularity graph of former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf in his constituency, NA-58, is comparatively better than of other PPP candidates in different constituencies of Rawalpindi.On the other hand PTI Candidate Ch. Muhammad Azeem popularity graph is also raising high owing to massive welfare and charity works. He belongs to small Town of Tehsil Gujar Khan called “Daultala”. Most of the area people admired and lauded the social contacts of Ch. Mohammad Azeem with common people of the Tehsil.
Raja Javaid Ikhlas of PML-N had won the National Assembly seat (NA-51) in 2013 election by defeating former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf with a huge margin. Mr. Ikhlas secured 121,069 votes against Mr Ashraf’s 67,146 votes, while Raja Farhat Faheem Bhatti of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf got 39,842 votes.
The past history of this historic constituency was as under. In 1970 General Elections, Malik Muhammad Jafar of PPP under the charismatic leadership of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto won the constituency which was known as NW-27. In 1977 Election the constituency was renamed as NA-37 and again Raja Abdul Aziz Bhatti of PPP won the seat for Z.A. Bhutto. Then in 1985 Elections under General Zia ul Haq, Malik Mehboob Hussain won the seat as an Independent Candidate. In 1988 Elections, Raja Muhammad Zaheer Khan of IJI coalition won the seat. In 1990 Elections, Raja Muhammad Zaheer Khan of IJI won the seat for the second time. In 1993, Chaudhry Muhammad Riaz of PML-N won the seat. In 1997 Election Raja Nadir Pervez Khan of PML-N won the seat. In 2002 Election the constituency was renamed as NA-51 and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf of PPP won the seat. In 2008 General Elections again Raja Pervaiz Ashraf won the seat for second time. In 2013 General Election Muhammad Javed Ikhlas of PML-N won the seat and defeated Raja Pervaiz Ashraf. Raja Ashraf, who had suffered defeat in six elections at the hands of PML-N in NA-51, won the seat in 2002 general elections first time with a huge margin by defeating Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri, head of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), PML-Q and PML-N candidates.
In the 2008 elections, Ashraf secured 80,247 votes and won the seat while PML-N’s Muhammad Riaz got 56,381 votes and PML-Q’s Raja Qasim Javed Ikhlas bagged 69,690 votes.
Raja Pervez Ashraf after winning two consecutive general elections established himself as a mainstream politician on national political canvas. In 2013 that PML_N candidate Raja Javaid Ikhlas of the Pakistan Muslim League-N has won the National Assembly seat (NA-51) by defeating former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf with a huge margin.
