Geneva: Veteran Human Rights activist and leader All Parties Hurriyat Conference Pak chapter Alftaf Hussain Wani while appreciating the UNHCR commissioner and his team for releasing first-ever detailed report on Kashmir has said that the High Commissioner and his team has given the world a lesson in not letting political complexities stand in the way of doing the right thing.
Speaking on behalf of World Muslim Congress Wani said, “We commend the human rights defender of Indian occupied Kashmir for their cooperation with office of the high commissioner, risking their live due to state reprisals. The UNHCR report he said has generated new wave of optimism in Kashmir where thousands of people were killed and women were gang-raped by Indian soldiers, nearly 7,000 Kashmiris have partially or totally lost their eye sights due to the use of pellet-firing shotguns by Indian occupation.
He said that the report recognizes that Jammu & Kashmir is an international dispute and right to self determination of people Kashmir is protected under international law and paves the way for an urgent humanitarian intervention in a conflict zone that involves powerful armies and nuclear powers. He regrettably noted that the Government of India has described the report a selection of unverified incidents. To the contrary he said that the Government of Pakistan has welcomed the report and expressed willingness to work with the Office the High Commissioner on report recommendations.
“This is an opportune time for this Council to start work toward ending Kashmir Conflict permanently, in according with UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people”, Wani maintained. He also urged the Council to act on the key recommendation of the report to establish an international commission of inquiry into the human rights situation in Kashmir and urge Indian Government to open the territory of Kashmir for international scrutiny.
